Your hair is so nice, what is it?

I have Sisterlocks on my hair. My sizes range from micro (around the edges) to small .

Note: Sisterlocks range from micro to large (Sisterlocks & Brotherlocks). Micro is currently not recommended, and it is not done all over...just around the edges.

So how much did it cost to install?

Most consultant charge per hours and that is what you need to be aware of. The installation cost for me was 35 dollars per hours (three days, 8 hours each day).

Note: The smaller the locks, the longer the time it takes to retighten as well as to install.

How much does it cost to maintain it?

Since I stay with the same consultant that installed it; she charges me 20 dollars an hour which include a wash. I go for retighten every 4-5 weeks. Time range between 4 1/2-5 hours.

Note: If you choose the micro sisterlocks version, you have to keep a tight maintenance schedule to avoid longer retighten time as well as breakages.

Do you like it that small? What are the disadvantages of having it that small?

Yes I like my locks this small. Hhaving them this small give me so many options and possibility as far as hair style is concern. The disadvantage of having them this small is the retighten time. Another disadvantage is that if I ever decide to retighten my locks, it will take me a whole week to do so. The last disadvantage is the cost. As you know, most consultant charge per hour, so the smaller the lock, the costlier it will be to retighten. This cost could be eliminated by doing it yourself but I don't plan to be a DIYer unless I have too. FYI...I spend way more money doing my hair in weaves, braids, etc then I do now.

So do your locks snap or break easily?

After my first year being sisterlocks, I notice I was experience hair thinning. This cause me to lose a dozen locks so far. My hair is growing back in that area, but the thinning was really bad, and I still have more lock to lose before I can say I’m done with lost lock due to hair thinning.

Note: Dreads locs & Sisterlocks do snap and break, but there are many reasons on why that happens. The most common reasons for lost locks are heavy pressure on the root of the hair or pulling on the locs itself. Other cause of loc snapping or breaking could range from stress related to hormonal imbalance. Sisterlocks can grow as long as regular dreads.

It seems that I need to upgrade on a favorite hair style I like to wear. My sisterlocks are getting longer and thicker, which is causing the back of my locks not to curl or get that crinkle wavy look I like.

This upgrade for me is the same, but it takes a little longer now to create that certain type of look. I still have to braid my hair the night before, and in order to get that crinkle micro wavy look, I now have to do individual plats. If your locks are shorter then mines, then you may want to try this one, it is much quicker. Below are the quick breaks down on how I achieve this style.

Step by Step

1) You will need your water bottle spray (I assume you know by now you need one).

2) You will lightly spray your locks with your water. Please don't drench your hair. Drenching you hair will ruin the result the next day if you don't let your hair dry. A light spray on your locs will do the job.

3) You are then going to section your hair into small to medium plats. The smaller the plats the more wavy kinky your sisterlocks will look.


Note: Give you self enough time to unbraid your hair and style it. I’m very active but this style last a couple days for me. If you have any questions go ahead and leave a comment.

I pretty sure everyone from time to time goes through stress and not eating right. I know sometime my stress level goes up so fast and hard, that I tend to lost hair as a result. So as you guys know (if you been following) I was battling hair thinning after my first year of being sisterlocks. Now that my hair is growing back beautiful, I started to do some research on how stress affects the body. So one night I decided to search for the term "stress depletes what vitamin" and found wealth of information on that topic. All in all, stress deplete a good amount of vitamin B (which is good for hair, nails, and skin) and as well as Vitamin C (which is good for immune system, eye sight, and much more). Another interesting thing I found out about Alopecia (turn out I do have Alopecia) is that it’s a condition that is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. Say what? Interesting huh! I'm not saying that if you increase your Biotin and Vitamin C intake that you’re Alopecia will be cure but I wonder if there is way to prevent it from coming up in the future. Taking vitamin to cure hair loss or thinning maybe another myth, like using a ton of coco butter will stop stretch mark, but it doesn't hurt to try, and I think peace of mind is always a plus.

In conclusion: Please be advise that this is my opinion guys - I truly believe Biotin is restoring the B vitamins that is being lost as you go on with your daily level of stressful environment. Vitamin C is improving your immune system which help fights against virus etc.

There are a lot of myths that goes around the forums, blogs, etc. concerning small locks or micro locks.

I'm going to list the most common ones I have ran across.

1. Sisterlocks (microlocks) breaks or snap easily.
2. Sisterlocks (microlocks) are not good for thin hair.
3. Micro Sisterlocks are not truly natural or dreads.
4. Sisterlocks cause hair thinning.
5. Sisterlocks can't be taken down.
6. Sisterlocks can't be maintain by you (DIYer)



I have micro sisterlocks, and I can tell you right now, NONE of those statements are true. If you decided to go the route of sisterlocks, the pattern your consultant does on your hair is what makes your locks strong, no matter what size it is.

Now here the deal, micro sisterlocks is taboo in the sisterlocks community, most consultant don't want to deal with the time it takes to first install them, as well as the time it takes to retighten them. It very labor intense for your consultant, but if you are willing to pay for the time, and don't mind how long it takes to retighten, then you need to state clearly that you want micro sisterlocks. Caution: If a consultant states that your hair can't be that small, make her tell you the reason and shop around. If more than one consultant tells you the same thing - accept it! Hair type plays a major role on how your sisterlocks will turn out. Leave it to the professionals!

All dreads snap or break, it all depend on how healthy you are, and what type of stress you are putting on your locks. Hair style that put heavy pressure on the root will always at one point or another cause damages that is irreversible. As long as you avoid putting much strain on your locs, your sisterlocks should grow long and beautiful.

Another myth that is ramped, is hair thinning. Hair thinning should not be an issue that you second guess about. If you experience hair thinning then you needs to address it directly by visiting a Dermatologist. Researching about hair thinning is not bad, but you have to be aware that most opinion are just that - OPINIONS. Peace of mind - go see a Dermatologist. So far I lost three locks. The second and third lost loc was all due to hair thinning (from STRESS) and NOT because of the size of my locks. Micro sisterlocks does not cause hair thinning, I know firsthand because my sisterlocks are actually growing where my hair started to thin due to braids, weaves, etc.

Another false information that is spreading around is that sisterlocks CAN'T be maintained by you. That statement is not true. It can be maintain by you! You advised to stick with your consultant for six month (depending how well your locks are doing). There are plenty of videos out there, which shows you how to maintain your locs. So don't worry about being tied to one person forever. If I ever decided to maintain my own locks, I have two options, I can purchase the nappy hair tool & booklet or I can take the retighten class offer by the sisterlocks.com, and used the sisterlocks tool to retighten my locks. Please keep in mind, if you a DIYer, then you may want to consider the big version of sisterlocks which is the brotherlocks.

Last note: Sisterlocks can't be taken down. That statement is not true, like all dreads, sisterlocks CAN be taken down. There’s plenty of video and how to on taking them down. If you are thinking of taking your sisterlocks down, then maybe you may want to wait before embarking on the sisterlocks journey. I, myself, research sisterlocks for two years before having them install. Sisterlocks will be around, so down worry about jumping in if you are not ready.

As for the statement that sisterlocks are not dreads, well that statement is just silly, and doesn't need to be address.

I totally believe the way you treat your body, will directly affect, one way or another, how your hair grow. This theory applies if you are locked or natural. I learn that I have to take care of my body in order to get healthy hair & locs. Below is what I do to promote growth, and healthy Micro Sisterlocks.
Body: GYM (Exercise), & Vitamins (Biotin & One A Day Women's)
Hair: WATER (Everyday), Moisturizing Spray (1-2 week), Treatment (1 monthly), Essential Oil (After Every Wash).
Maintenance: Shampoo (1.5 weekly), Conditioner (1 monthly), Retighten (4-5 week)

In the beginning of my sisterlocks experience, I post a topic on the sisterlocks fan page, and it was about my abnormal shedding. I was trying to figure out if the shedding that I was experiencing with my open ends were normal.

The reply back was the following. The tip of your hair is dyed, and that may be the reason why you experiencing more than normal hair shedding. I thought that was a logical argument, as you see in my pictures, my color tips are almost gone. Were the color tips just shedding off? Is that part of the locking process? I couldn't find any topics about hair shedding while being sisterlocked. My sisterlocks use to sheds a lot, nothing compare to when I wore my hair as a natural, but enough to have me concerned. I should have took pictures of my carpet floor when my sisterlocks was shedding excessively, now I don't have much proof and currently not dealing with any shedding.

The white bulb that I see on my locks is something I figure that is part of the locking process. The white bulb is the root of your hair. Normally your hair shed off and you won't really see it. When you are locking your hair, the shedding hair get trap into your dreaded locks. I think the only way to really get rid of them is to dye them, but it really doesn’t bother me much. To someone who is wondering what the heck it is and how to get rid of them, now you know.

I ran across a tweet that stated who count 823 sisterlocks and stated that I need psychological help with my picture attached. This shouldn't bother me but it does. I mean, I thought having sisterlocks period is considered crazy to most. I would think another person that is sisterlocks would be more understand then others. Anyway to answer that tweet, I ask a friend to count my sisterlocks, you can read further on that post here, and we both were shocked on the amount of locks I have. My consultant specialize in micro sisterlocks, so she have client in Atlanta that she visit, just to do their hair and she stated my locks amount is a lot less then her other client. I don't regret having micro sisterlocks and the reason I decided to blog about my sisterlocks is because there just not many blogs about my size locs. Anyway - I shouldn't feel bum about it but I do, I think I'm too sensitive, and if I want to continue to blog I will have to develop tougher skin. I feel better now...thanks guys for following on my blog & YouTube.

I finally got the Sisterlocks Moisture Treatment. I ask around and I totally believe I needed this product. I'm really trying not to be a product junkie but alas I can't help it. Anyway I did some research, looked at couple blogs and forums, to find out the best way to apply the moisture treatment. Not many sites went into detail on how to apply it, so I end up waiting for the jar to arrive in order to find out how to apply this treatment. Some of the sisterlocks blogs suggest that you should only apply this treatment once a month (if needed) and it should be diluted. I apply this after my 12th retighten secession. Below are the step by step instructions on how I apply the Sisterlocks Moisture Treatment.

1) I took 1/2 tsp of the moisture treatment and put it in the spray bottle.

2) I then put it in 1/8 cup of water in the bottle. Rule of thumb: Put enough water where the mixture can easily be sprayed.

3) Then I thoroughly spray my locs with the moisture treatment, making sure the treatment did NOT touch the scalp.

Above is the Mixture	I use every single drop.
The bottle stated to keep in a dry cool place because it has perishable ingredients.

The reason why I don't want to add moisture treatment on my scalp is because A) if I have a lot of product on my scalp it tends to make my scalp very itchy. So I try to avoid spreading or apply any unnecessary products on there. B) Your scalp naturally produces oil anyway. So why add to it?

Now you guys know how I apply the Sisterlocks Moisture Treatment. Of course the amount that I specify works for the length of my hair. You will have to adjust depending on the length. After you apply the treatment, you can either let your loc air dry or braid it down for a curly/wavy look the next day.

This product is amazing and a little goes a long way. As soon as I apply it to my sisterlocks it felt wonderful and truly MOISTURIZE! I highly recommend it and please be advised that my hair is locked, so use caution, if your hair is not locked.

I finally put some conditioner on my locs! I'm still bundling and I didn't put any on the section that haven't been locked. I have to say, I didn't get any unraveling, nor did I notice any residues. I think the main reason I didn't get any unraveling is because of the conditioner I used. The name of the conditioner I'm using is Aura Rosemary Mint Rejuvenating Conditioner, the same line as the shampoo. Once I rinse out the conditioner, my sisterlocks felt great.

I'm thinking of using this conditioner once a month. Once my hair is completely locked, then I will do an ACV Rinse. Will keep you posted when I do. Notice how the ingredient on my shampoo and conditioner has rosemary. From what I have read and researched, Rosemary is excellent for hair growth.

This is my first time doing a hair review, so don't worry about missing anything. I find that my micro Sisterlocks are always changing and evolving. I'm face with every day challenges that will just get more challenge as my hair continues to grow. As you know I went and saw my dermatologist on September 3 to figure why my hair was thinning and how to avoid that in the future. You can find out more about my visit here. Below is the tip of my locks. I wonder if these ever truly lock. Or does the hair continue to shed until it reaches the lock end? I ran into another Sisterlocks sister and she stated her ends never really locked. But her hair locked lock to me, and she stated her hair was locked. Below is a close up of my lock in full detail. For the most part, my locks are pretty healthy, but there are areas that are not so healthy. Due to my thinning hairs, some of my lock starting to thin out, giving way to what I consider unhealthily locks. I am going to have to talk to my consultant to find out what my option are concerning that area. I may end up having a couple of two headed dragon in that area, which if my hair continue to grow, I may have slighter bigger locks in that area. I will do an in depth hair review from time to time. I know my hair will just continue to challenge me as it continues to grow.

I think I post too much about my hair journey, but you never know who will later benefit from this post as they too struggle with hair thinning. Now that I decided not to use Rogaine, to regrow the section that was thinning out, I decided to go through the route of a natural herbal remedies instead.

I work at a company that sells herbal and homeopathic remedies, so you know I had to at least try out one of their product, since I do get a discount.

I decided to go with ReGrow Scalp Massage Oil™. I research each ingredient on there, to see if it indeed helps with hair growth; the two ingredients that caught my eye were Rosemary Essential Oil and Sage Essential Oil. All the articles, blog, and forum I have read, stated that those ingredients are really good for hair growth. So I made up my mind and purchase the product. I'm not here to promote my company product over any others, I'm sure there are many other products that have the same ingredients, and benefit. I bought my company product because A) I get a discount & B) I trust them. I truly believe this product will last me a good while since I will be rubbing it on the spot that has been troubling me.

So far my hair has stop thinning, and now I’m in the process of playing catch up.

I try to do some research and I have not found many blog about how it affects Sisterlocks. From what I read, I DON’T like the fact that many people refer to Rogaine hair as being fake, and that what many say Rogaine for Men hair seems like.

I think people who want to use Rogaine for Men won’t mind if it covering balding spot, but I don’t have it and I just rather my hair just regrow back to normal. My company has an herbal remedies to regrow hair. I think I will purchase that and see how that goes. As soon as I purchase it, I will do a post about it.

The visit went well. I told my doctor why I was there and explain my history with hair thinning and hair lost. He told me from the look of it that it doesn’t seem that I have any type of Alopecia (my scalp looked healthy). I ask him many question and the one that was most important was how long will this last? Is this something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life? He said, since I have experience this issue in the past, that I may indeed have a repeat of this issue in the future. He said the regrow process varies for many people but it will happen, he just can’t say when. I was bum at this news. He also did some blood works and will give me the result in 2 weeks. He wanted to check for any thyroid problems etc.


He prescribed Rogaine for Men 5% to me and told me to use it twice a day. He said the result will not be immediate but it should start to grow back. I’m happy that I don’t have Alopecia and I hope I can fight this issue with knowledge.

Next visit will be in two month. Hopefully by then I will have some good news.

I still bundle after one year of being sisterlocked. My reason is simple, I don’t want any mishap until my consultant tell me to stop bundling, and less unraveling mean less retightening time. So far she hasn’t told me to stop bundling.

My hair for the most part is lock. When I bundle now, it a whole lot faster than how it was in the beginning. Now I twist a section of my locks and put a rubber band at the tips. Since the back of my hair is not completely lock (you can read further on that topic here), I have to braid my hair down vs. doing the twists, to make sure I don’t get any unraveling.
