Itch Relief & Moisturizing My Sisterlocks

9:11 PM

My consultant told me from the very beginning not to use any product but water on my sisterlocks. She told me that will help speed up the locking process. She then informed me that when my sisterlocks have settled, I can try other products for moisture retention. I followed her instructions to the “T”. Once she said my hair has settled, and was beginning to lock, I starting looking for ways to soften my locks. I also had issue with my scalp being itchy all the time, so I started looking for product that helps reduce itchiness as well.

So I went ahead and purchased an empty spray bottle. Second purchase was the Sea Breeze for the itchiness and the final purchased was the Next Image Avocado Oil and Shea Butter. I diluted that solution in about 75% water (so you will need a second spray bottle). That product is amazing, it softens my hair but DOES NOT makes it feel oily at all. It also happens to have a very pleasant smell. It comes in two scents, Avocado Oil and Shea Butter and Coco-Mango (I have not tried the Coco-Mango).

The current products I that I'm using on my sisterlocks are as followed: Distill Water: every other day, Sea breeze: 1-2 weekly and Avocado Oil and Sea Butter: 2-3 time weekly.

  1. I am in my babyloc stage. I have dry scalp thats a bit itchy. I love my SLs. I use Deionized water, with olive oil and peppermint oil (essence of peppermint) to spritz my hair.

  2. @Shanice I end up switching to another moisturizer since my sisterlocks is more settle but I'm glad you comment on this. Your solution may help others that are in the early stage of sisterlocks.

  3. How long did they take to settle? Fear of a dry scalp and hair are keeping me from getting SL. I don't know If I could handle not using a moisturizer daily as I have really coarse hair and dry scalp.

  4. @sixtymillion My sisterlocks took 6 month to settle not locked. You are asked not to put anything on your scalp in order to prevent unraveling as well speeding the locking process. If you a scalp is very dry, and you need to moisturize it, then do so. You can also moisturizer your sisterlocks as well, just note that your locks may take a while longer to settle as well as lock. Don’t let the fear of not putting anything on your locks prevent you from getting sisterlocks. Once you get your sisterlocks, treat your scalp and hair the way you feel it needs to be treated. Also ask your consultant, they may have ways to help ease you into the settling process.

  5. Do you have any product recommendations to use on children? My 2 year olds hair is in the process of locking, 5 months now, and I struggle to find residue free shampoos for her that is kid friendsly (easy on the eyes). Any suggestions? Thanks

  6. It is going to be hard to find a shampoo that is residue free for a child. I suggest using Johnsons Baby Shampoo without the conditioner since your child is in the early stage of locking. Also try to minimize the product you apply on her hair.

If you have tried Johnsons and didn't like the result, try looking for shampoo that is free from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate, those are the harsher detergent that hurts the eyes.

When you think she can handle a better shampoo, upgrade her to Neutrogena - Anti-Residue Shampoo that should keep the residue at bay, and still allow her the freedom to be a kid and not have to worry about her locks.

  8. Hey Rochelle if you looking for a good moisturizer I suggested using Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier. I did a review about it after discontinuing the above product. Right now I'm currently using a homemade spray that I make, and you can search for that that recipe in the search box under mixology.
