Updates on Thin Sides, Middle Growth & Color Retention

7:58 AM

Concerns are out there about sisterlocks and hair thinning. I had three women in the past asked me directly about thinning hair and how it relates to sisterlocks. These women have run into other woman that had issues with thinning hair (whether it their sides or their middle scalp) and assume that sisterlocks are the cause of it. I can't really answer for the women they have run into, but I can speak on the subject of why sisterlocks doesn't cause hair thinning for most. So the question remains. Does sisterlocks really cause hairs to be thin? My answer is no, as evident from the pictures below. This is why I continue to show how much of a progress having sisterlocks made to my sides, which originally got damaged by wearing weaves, braids, etc. I also like to explain to the women that approach me that I too had issues with thinning hair, and they were not cause by my sisterlocks, but of internal issues. Of course, thinning hair while having sisterlocks can happen without any internal issues, but that can be attributing to tight hair styles, over retightening, and using tools incorrectly. So if you are considering getting sisterlocks, you can always ask your "future" consultant about these types of issues. Now on to the pictures: D.

My Damage Sides - Before & After
I continue to take Biotin & One a Day Women's. I also massage my oil (mixture of Rosemary, Sage, and Castor Oil) around that area two times a week.

Area of Slow Growth From Thinning = Success
I had struggled with hair thinning long before sisterlocks, and I know I will continue to struggle while being sisterlocked. The battle has been won for now, but I'm also aware that I may continue to deal with this issue later down the road. One issue that did concern me about my thinning hair was maintaining my grid. Even though the thinning had stop, I was so fearful that I would lose my grid and have a bunch of mix match locks that I would sometime get depressed about it. I know it silly but that what I love about the sisterlocks and the whole point of me justifying the cost to get sisterlocks.

A perfect neat grid has always been something I admire on any dreadlock wearer, and if I didn't go the route of sisterlocks, then I would have chosen small locks with perfects parts. As you can see below, my consultant did a decent job of maintaining my grids, not as perfect as when I first got them installed, but maybe when it gets a little bit fuller, the grids will start looking much better. I'm happy to note that the slow to growth area is now being locked: D. Hopefully I can put this painful hair thinning episode behind me for good.

Jet Black Hair Dye - Not So Much
Colors are creeping back in, but I have to say Naturtint is still holding on strong. I colored my sisterlocks the Jet Black color about 7 month ago, and if thing continue to progress this nicely I may end up coloring it jet black again around my 3 year anniversary. Now I have to admit, the jet black color would last longer if I only use color safe shampoo like Miss Jessie's, but I also use clarify shampoo once a month. The clarify shampoo speed up the fading of the original color because it so striping. All and all, I'm still happy with my new dye and if I need a hint of color I can always do my temporary hair spray.

  2. @Pebbles Thanks!

@Carmen I'm glad this post was able to help you make a decision about sisterlocks. Please let your consultant know about your thinning issues and I'm sure she will find some ways to help or even reduce any sign of thinness.

  3. This was right on TIME!!! I just had my 3rd reti last night and with EVERY reti I am always concerned about my edges. The thinnning of my edges are not related to SL's, my edges were think PRIOR from wearing weaves/braids etc. but I have got to find your mixture. I have been using JBCO mixed with peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus, but I may have to try your mixture. I've got to try something to get a handle on my edges, your progress looks fabulous!! I like you will continue to struggle with thinning edges. I always have and I always will. You give me hope though b/c your hair always looks so great, so it's all good!!!

    Thanks,
    Jai

  4. @Jai Thanks!! The pictures are what give me hope. Looking at your sides everyday won't show progress unless you compare pictures of how they were before. I still hope to have more growth there, so I will continue to monitor them and do timely updates until I'm satisfy. If you interested in my mixture just search for mixology and click on the one for thinning hair. Thanks again for the lovely comment!
