How To: Perm Rods on Sisterlocks

7:50 AM

To see the result of the Perm Rods click here. The perm rods are a relatively cheap way to curl your sisterlocks. Perm Rods are available at any beauty supply store ranging from small to large. So get comfortable, because this will take a good portion of your time, but the end result is VERY pretty.

Material Needed
Perm Rods
Spray Bottle
Setting Lotion(Optional)
Step 1) If you just purchase your perm rods, I suggest taking them out of the bag, and pop the cap off the rods. This makes it easy to grab and keep the flow going while you are rolling your locks on to the rods.
Step 2) Figure out the amount of locks you want to fit on your rods. Keep in mind that you can't put a lot on the individual rods since the rubber will keep popping out of the cap.
Step 3) Once you have the amount of locks you want, spray them with the water & setting lotion (optional), and proceed to roll them on the rod. Note: DO NOT drench your locks. A light spray will do.
Step 4) Once you have reached the scalp, hold the rod with one hand and then proceed to grab the cap and drag it on the top of your rod & fingers. Slide the cap into the hole of the rod.
Step 5) Repeat Steps 1-4 through out the head. Once completed, proceed with your satin bonnet as coverage.

If you have longer sisterlocks, don't expect these curls to last longer then a day or two without a settling lotion.

  1. Hi Kreyola,
This is a nice post. I do use those same perm rods if I want medium-sized curls. I also have the smallest size of perm rods which I use if I want tight curls.
However for more body, I roll the hair in an outward motion (here you have rolled it in an inward motion). If I want the curls to last longer, I roll 3 locks on a perm rod. For more hold, I add some honey on my damp locs before setting. Thanks for this post. I love your blog.

  2. @Zar...I thinking of getting some smaller perm rods as well. I know I need more of the medium size perm rods. I also need to roll a lot less locks on the perm rods to get the Shirley Temple effect that I want. For the outward motion, I completely understand what you mean. I use the soft spike in that direction I will have to try it out with the perm rods as well and see how that turn out. As always thanks for your comments!
