Winter Time Maintenance - Nothing New except...

6:04 PM

We Floridian hardly get major cold fronts, and since I came back from Ohio, I really can't complain about our little cold front that barely stay more than two days before it bright and warm again. With that in mind, I still moisturize my locks with my spray every time I wash my hair. If it's warm outside, and I need a little boost, I use a small spray bottle that is filled with distilled water for manageability sake.

When it cooler (I can't say cold ^_^), like today 54 degrees weather for example, I don't spray my locks with water but I do stream my locks. Steaming my sisterlocks in the morning help "wake up" them up for the day. Steaming for me is not using a shower cap while I'm in the shower (usually involving warm/hot water). For the shorter locks this should be very easy to do. Since my sisterlocks is slighter longer now, I just do twin pony tails and tuck them in to avoid my locks getting wet. This is the only different where my maintenance for winter time is concern. I still take Biotin & One Day Vitamins. I still shampoo and condition my sisterlocks. I did a semi-permanent rinse last weekend, and will be releasing a post this weekend. Anyhow, I curious to know if you guys have a totally different routine where winter is concern, especially if their snow and the temperature is below 20 (Brrr!).

  2. My bathroom is not that big so it perfect for it. I have a slider door, so all I have to do is add my extra shower curtain at the very top area of bath/shower area. I just use tape to hold it up in the ceiling. I know it sound ghetto but it works and I take it down when I'm done and store it for when I need to use it again. The stream that gets generated from the hot shower is all I need. Now I know they have steamers out there that cost around $120 or more, but I don't need my locks steam all the time, so the shower works just as good and it gets good and steamy in there as well.

  3. Hey K, being an Ohioan (it's 31 degrees today)I have minor seasonal challenges with my hair. Most times I just spray a little reverse osmosis water mixed with Shea nut oil into my hair every night before I go to work. When a want a really good deep moisturizing treatment on my hair I spray my hair with the water/oil mixture add some leave in conditioner and sit in the sauna for about an hour. Sometimes I just apply a little leave in conditioner and call it a day. My hair feels great all of the time and it moves with ease.

  4. @Ni...Thanks for sharing. I always wonder about the deep temperature change like below 30 and how it affects sisterlocks. So extra moisture is a must it seems.

  5. Awesome! I think my hair gets a bit of a daily steaming treatment in the shower, but once my locks mature a bit more, I'll go all out and try the method you described here.

  6. This subject matter is great timing! I just got a retightening and my locks are so dry right now. Steaming is a good idea. I will have to experiment on how to maximize the bathroom steam though. Thanks!

  7. I too use to semi stream my locks before, when they were shorter, but now with my moisturizer the day before, and the deep steaming of my hair the next morning, my Sisterlocks feel light and condition. My locks are longer now so it not as easy to keep them dry hence why I use a shower cap for the most part.

  8. Hi Kreyola, it's NaomiRain. A recent professional hot oit/ steam treatment has left me baffled. I found that my locks got extremly dry follwing the hot oil steam treatment. My locs became super compacted and tight. I would go as far as saying it ddn't leave my hair moisturised at all. Further research i've done has left me even more confused. Some say steam opens the hair cuticle, others say it smoothens out the hair shaft? in all my experience was that my locs though shiny and well oiled were brittle and dry...i'm not sure if it was the oil or the steam or a combination of both. In any case, with regards to your question, i moisturise really regularly now and follow PR Charles youtube winter moisutre treatement . Your hair is lovely !

    1. That is so strange??? Sorry for the late respond, but do you happen to know which type of oil(s) you added to your locks? I have a "How To" on hot oil treatment and the only treatment I don't like using as a "hot oil" treatment was the "sisterlocks moisture treatment." If I just use plain jojoba and castor oil (or even olive oil and castor oil) the result are great. I never steam when I do a hot oil treatment though.

  9. What part of Ohio did you live? I have a steamer-waste of money and so complicated to put together; and, I always get burned assembling. I miss my gym membership where I had an awesome steam room. I do the shower thing from time to time.

    1. I actually never lived there. I went to visit a friend there, and she was living in Cincinnati. Now I like to steam my locks at the GYM and from time to time at the shower as well.
