Mature Sisterlocks - What Is My Current Maintenance

8:45 AM

I do have a maintenance label on my blog, and I always thought that was enough. Even though I have that label defined, I still get ask what I do to maintain my mature Sisterlocks. I never released an official post about it in the past, and I'm glad I didn't, because what I did in the past, does not apply now. Below is my current routine in maintaining my "mature" Sisterlocks. Even though this post is imitating, it's really not. For the most part, I get my roots retighten every 4-5 weeks, wash them, take vitamins, and moisturize. If you want more detail, continue reading below.

Every Month Maintenance
The common stuff I do is shampoo and condition. I take Biotin internally, and apply my moisturize spray to my locks, and an oil mixture on my scalp. The Break down is below.

Shampoo & Conditioner
I wash my Sisterlocks every two weeks (or more) with a moisturizing set of shampoo, and what I consider a clarifying shampoo. The brand I use varies, because I like the fact that I can use different shampoo, and not be dependent on one type of brand. The key for me is having a shampoo that clarify (must has SLS or something similar). Nothing cleans my locks as well as a product that has SLS. Note: Some people do not like SLS products, which is fine, and if that you, you may want to consider clarifying with BSW & ACV.

Management (Retightening)
I go for a retighten every 4 weeks, I rarely ever go 5 week, because of the size of my locks. I honestly pushing it at 5 weeks (meaning I can introduce breakages). Note: If you have bigger locks, you can usually get away with 6 week, and 8 week being the max (with some possibility of some locks lost).

Other (Vitamins Etc.)
I take Biotin every day (1,000 mcg vs. 5,000 prior). I apply what I consider "hair regrowth oil" every other week (or when I feel my scalp is dry). I tend to wash this oil mixture the day after though to reduce an itchy scalp. I spray my locks with my homemade spray every week (in the summer, I only need to apply it after a wash or sometime after a color rinse or dye).

Every Other(s) Months
The stuff here varies from 6 months to every 2-3 months. The things I do here are a hot oil treatment and apply a jet black color refresh or permanent jet black color.

Color
I apply a permanent color every year (usually at or after my anniversary). I do a color rinse update as I need it. Normally after a permanent color application, I can wait another six month for the next jet black color refresh. Once that six month phase is gone, the color rinse needs to apply more frequent, every 3-4 months.

Treatment
I normally apply a Hot Oil Treatment the same time I apply my color rinse. If I do the permanent color, I tend to apply the hot oil treatment a month after, and another 3 months after that. I normally create my own hot oil treatment, or if I'm lazy, I use the Sisterlocks Moisturize Treatment (don't like doing that though since it not a very good hot oil treatment and it gets grainy).

Finally, I drink lots of WATER. I found when I drink lots of water, my scalp and my overall hair health does much better. Hope this post was helpful. Everyone have different needs, so do not think this is a must do for you in order to have healthy growing Sisterlocks. If you don't apply color, you won't need to do the intense treatments above.

  1. I am so happy that you recommended SLS shampoos. Sulfates are important in cleaning and clarifying hair. The main reason people are hesitant about sulfates is that sulfates can not tell the difference between "artificial hair color" and dirt. So people find that their expensive hair color starts to fade too quick. So SLS shampoos definitely have a place in the hair industry for those who need it!

    1. I honestly think SLS is extremely important for people that are locked. In order to avoid the buildup, SLS is what I will recommend for locks wearers. I know its very striping, but it is a lot easier to add back moisture, then to remove years of buildup and debris. Just my two cent on the SLS or similar topic. Thanks for the excellent feedback about sulfates.

P.S. I know SLS stripe out color faster, but I just can't have my Sisterlocks looking grungy and dull. That what was happening when I tried to stick with color safe shampoo or non SLS type shampoo. Those work great when I was a natural but not so much as a lock wearer.

  2. could you explain your drying process after a shampoo. my sisterlocks are 11 months old and i was just air drying but now they have thickened up and are longer and sometimes after air drying they get that sour smell. i did the baking soda and vinegar rinse and it worked great. Do you blow dry?

    1. If you are getting a sour smell, you either not letting your hair dry enough or you still have product build up in your locks.

My Drying Process is explain below
      -------------------

If I'm washing my hair for my schedule appointment (which is always in the afternoon), I let my Sisterlocks air dry all day. It takes a total of 4-5 hours for it to air dry. I don't confine my Sisterlocks at all.

The only time I use my hair dryer is if I wash my hair at night (since I sleep with a hair bonnet) or if I curl or braid them down. I found since my Sisterlocks has gotten longer, I have to dry them for about 30min or they will be damp the following morning or the curl or braid out won't take. The longer my Sisterlocks get, the longer it takes to dry, and I factor that whenever I use my dryer.

P.S. I don't blow dry, I use a bonnet hair dryer (I have a review on it on this blog).

  3. I used to air dry my small BLs…the smell told me I had mildew. I don't play with damp locks anymore. Now that it's winter, I blow-dry on a low-heat setting with a diffuser bc I always was on Fri nights and I"m not going to bed on damp locks every again. I know better, oh too well. I knew it then, just thought I was immune or something..eshrugs.

    1. Lucky for me, I never like sleeping on damp lock, so I always made sure I wash my hair in the mornings and let them air dry all day. If I must wash them at night, I blow dry them before I go to bed.

    1. I would have to really look at your Sisterlocks to see. The most common reason that I see Sisterlocks start to look like traditional is if they were done originally bigger. As your locks start to mature, the appearance will change and most people don't factor that in when they decided to go bigger (or in some case merge their locks).

I'm sure your Sisterlocks is still look lovely and have that wonderful grid known to be worn by Sisterlocks wearers.
