Normal Lightening Condition

The result of this was very beautiful and natural looking. I going to update the "How To" post with updated pictures using the soft pastel colors in the near future (when I apply this again). Below is my review on Soft Pastel Chalk on Sisterlocks.

I finally got my purple highlights, and it came out really good under the flash (it honestly look like it glows under flash), but it is very dull under regular light. This is not as bright as the Jerome Spray (both the purple and the auburn), but it definitely more natural looking then both sprays.

I honestly like it, and I think the lighter color will do better than the darker colors on my sisterlocks. I highly recommend this as an option to spice up your locks with color. You can check out the updated post about pastel on chalk here (that was done under the flash light). I think I may need to get some holding spray to see if the color would last even longer.

The below pictures were taken with my phone, which show how the actually purple color look under regular light. Trust when I say the darker colors would do well with bleach hair, but with darker color hair, it looks very dull and not very noticeable. When I apply this again in the future, I will do another post, and this time with the lighter colors. Please avoid my mistake, and do not apply this with regular chalk on your sisterlocks. You need premium, high pigmented soft pastel chalk.
I felt it best to take the pictures with my phone, since it will show the colors a little truer to form vs. using my camera. Even with these pictures, they are much brighter than what you actually see. Even my daughter was asking "Where the highlights?” My little girl is a trip (*chucking*). She did notice it more on the pictures, which she thought was "Cool".

Didn't I just say I wasn't going to test stuff on my locks again? This time around, I just did it on two locks first (just to be on the safe side -_-). I used the same method explain on the How To, and got the below result. I added in two more section to complete the look. Can I say this was a MUCH better outcome, and I finally got my PURPLE HIGHLIGHTS!!!!!! So ladies and gentlemen, the key is to use Soft Pastel the Premium Artist Quality.






I went ahead and modify my post; I will release a official review on Soft Pastel on Sisterlocks this weekend. Note: The color are much brighter on these picture due to the flash.

UPDATE - USE ONLY SOFT PASTEL AND DON'T USE ANY OTHER CHALK. I left this as a reference on how it will look with regular sidewalk chalk. The method on how to apply this is still the same. So check out the "how to" for this.

This style was done to celebrate the 4th of July. I'm now releasing it because it came with a round of posts attached to it. I wanted to see if the highlight would wash out, how long it will last, and if I needed to add some additional notes on how to do this. I did a complete shot, so you can actually see the chalk on my hair, is not as "chalky" far away. I took a lot of these pictures under direct flash light. Under normal lighting conditions, it doesn't look so bad. But you still using chalk to apply the highlight, and it look like chalk on your hair. I think this look less chalky with thicker locks, straighter or loose hair. Check out the how to, result, and review of chalk on Sisterlocks.

I though this was going to be a pain to apply, but it turn out be very easy, it just a pain to set up and apply compare to Jerome Russell hair spray. Now this was mostly done by our Caucasian sisters, but I did find a couple of YouTube video on them on locks. One youtuber didn't get the result she wanted, and another did. The one that did, following what our Caucasian sisters did, and found that was the best way to apply the chalk. I did the same and you can check out the result here. Note: You want to wear an old t-shirt and use an old towel for this.

Material Needed
Soft Pastel or Hair Chalk (No Oil Based Chalk!)
Water Bottle
Gloves
Hair Spritz
Blow Dryer
Flat Iron (optional for longer lasting color)

Step 1 - You will need to figure out the style you plan on wearing with this. Bantu Knots, Curls, or Crinkles. Get your items ready and move to Step 2. I decided to use pipe cleaners for curls.

Step 2 - Wet the locks you want to apply the highlights on. Note: You want to wear gloves, because this can get really messy.

Step 3 - You going to then rub the chalk up and down the area you want to have the color.


Step 4 - Spray your hand with the hair "holding" spritz, you then going to rub the spritz up and down the chalk covered lock. This will help steal the color chalk a little. Note: I didn't have hair spritz, but I did have Aloe Vera Gel, which was fine since I use it on my side from time to time. If you don't plan to do Step 5, I highly recommend getting a hair spritz to avoid bleeding and have the color lasting longer.

Step 5 - This is totally optional, but recommended, if you don't want the color to fade right away, as well as bleed, you going to have to blow dry it, and then roll over the locks with a flat iron to steal the chalk some more. If you don't care for this step, proceed to Step 6. Note: I used the lowest setting on my flat iron.

Step 6 - After you are done flat ironing, shake off the excess chalk dust first, before proceeding to Step 7. Note: Yes your colored hair will be mostly dry, but you can still add your curlers etc. on it. It will be a lot loser then the others curls, but it will be fine if you do the super tight curls like pipe cleaners.


Step 7 - Apply the curlers, braids, etc. to complete the look. Repeat the steps above when adding another color in another section. Note: If you going to add another color, rinse out your glove to remove most of the previous color.


This is a very temporary solution, so play around with as much colors as you want ^_^. Do NOT use oil based chalk, since they contain wax, which will cause build up on locks. Tips: When you are ready to wash your hair out, I suggest you rinse the area that has the highlight first in the sink, and then proceed to wash your hair in the shower. You will NEED a clarify shampoo, and you will need to moisturize!!! Please note that if you have lighter color locks (example red or blond), you may not need to wet your hair in order to get the colors. Test one of your locks first before damping your locks.

I ask that if you don't know how to properly clean your locks or have problem with shampoo that has SLS, please don't do this. You have to know how to properly wash your locks in order to avoid build up.

What can I say about this product, I was extremely disappointed with this color, and how it turned out on my sisterlocks! Sigh...I guess I won't ever get my purple highlights, since the one I do like, takes forever to do. Below is the review & result. For some reason I forgot to do a review of the Spray-in Natural Color Highlights (Auburn) by the same company, will be fixing that soon.

Below is close up of the Panther Purple color. How can I be satisfied with this, when the highlight with the weave looked so much better in comparison. I didn't even take my time with the weave version.

Intense Wash
After an intense wash, the color finally washes out. The only thing that came out of this was my decision to do "the color run marathon" after being able to wash this color out.



Conclusion: Applying this was easy enough, and it wasn't messy if done right (see "how to" here). My only issue with this was the color, it wasn't as bright of a purple compare to the faux highlight with weaves I did a couple months ago. It was more of a light purple on my jet black hair. I also had to spray it multiple times to get the color that I got compare to the Spray-in Natural Color Highlights (auburn) from the same company.

I normally apply highlights when I'm schedule to wash my hair a particular week, and I was so excited to try this, since the Petal Fro attempt was a complete let down for me (didn't have enough length in the middle). This week was a total bummer as far as wanting to spice up my locks for a party is concern.

This result post is not a complete result post since I only did two of them, before calling it quits....lol. I'm sorry, but I have NO patience for stuff like this (I'm so lazy -_-).  Maybe that is why I'm perfectly willing to let others work on my hair.

Applying the highlight though weave takes a LONG time, and you have to make sure you don't take the weave to thickly. If you take the weave too thick, you get the below result (see first and second picture), which is loose weave around the locks. I'm going to stick with my spray and do another result post with purple highlights once I get some purple hair spray.

For any of my followers that do have patience to do stuff like this, bless you, and I hope you don't run into me because I will bug you into doing mines :). If you interested in the "how to" on this, check out this post.  I also believe the thread would be a lot easier to deal with than the weave.

So I have been itching to color my hair with some purple highlights for a min now. I was going to do it with a temporary spray, but then I ran into a post on the sisterlocks fan page (Ms. Bacchus) that suggested using weave. Now I never thought I would be putting weaves on my hair again, but hey, to spice up my locks, I'm willing to do anything that is considered SAFE.

I have not found my purple weave yet, but I did have an old package of honey blond hair left, and I tested the water with that. The result was pretty and can only improve when I do decide to set a time for it. This method of adding highlight to sisterlocks vs. the spray, takes a whole lot longer, but I would imagine this would last a lot longer.

Material Needed
Color Weave or Embroidery Thread
Hair Bands
Scissors
Hair Pin

Step 1 - Pick where you want your highlights to go.


Step 2 - Use your hair band to tie down your locks. Since I have a lot of locks, I found splitting my locks into two section helps keep the stray locks from coming around the section I'm working on.


Step 3 - Pull out a small patch of your color weave/strands (or 1 thread). The amount  of the weave will depend on how thick your individual locks is, especially if you going to do it with with one or more locks. Note: I suggest doing it with at least two locks, which helps with the undoing of them.


Step 4a - You will need to create a magic knot. To do that, you will need to twist one of the strand (tread) over the next one.


Step 4b - Then you going to take one of the strand, and pull it through the hole you just created from the twist on 4a. You can see a live view on how to make the magic knot via curlynugrowth).



Step 5 - You are then going enter your lock into your hoop, and then when you reach the roots, you are going to tighten it.


Step 5 - Using the hair clip, you are then going to hold down the hair at the root. Note: If you don't do this step, the knot will not hold still, making it difficult to do Step 6.


Step 6 - You than going to wrap/twist the weave starting from the root to the end. This is seriously time consuming, and you will need time to do this. I did this quickly to do this post, but I will be taking my time for the result post.  Note: If your locks are longer then your weave, try making your weave strand uneven ( longer at one side) to extend the length.



Step 7 - Go past the length of your lock (not much, since you are not trying to extent it). Then you going to tie the ends in a shoestring knots. I did this quickly, but when I do this again, I will make sure there is no black hair poking out.

This was easy to achieve, but will take a while to do, and that is why I'm going to wait until I find my purple weave in order to do highlights on my locks. Will release a result post soon. Below is me taking the weave out with no issue (Note: it does take a while to undo though).
